Liposuction in Maryland
Liposuction greatly improves body contour by removing exercise-resistant fat from a variety of areas on the body. Common treatment areas are the upper and lower abdomen, hips and inner thighs, knees, upper arms, upper and lower back and the neck. The procedure uses vacuum assistance to allow suction of unwanted fat deposits. The procedure can be performed under either local or general anesthesia.
What can I expect after surgery?
The post-operative experience varies from patient to patient depending on the extent of treatment. Patients are encouraged to return to normal routine activities as soon as possible. Patients typically are able to walk and perform simple activities as soon as the first post-operative day, and most return to work within 1 week’s time. Patients may require oral pain medication. Bruising and swelling of treated areas is common. For best results, patients are prescribed a compressive garment following treatment.
What are the risks and potential complications?
Scaring after liposuction is usually minimal. The incisions made for the cannula placement are less than half a centimeter, and sutured close to encourage healing. As with any surgery there are risks of bleeding and infection. Asymmetry, skin sensation and pigmentation (skin color) changes although rare can occur. Careful attention to post-operative instructions minimizes risk and complications.
Will the fat come back?
No. The fat cells are removed from the body. However, remaining fat cells can grow larger. It is important to understand that liposuction is not a weight loss tool, and that weight gain can occur after the procedure. A healthy diet and exercise program are essential components to maintaining an optimum post-procedure contour.
How long will treatment take?
Procedures vary in length depending on the number of areas to be treated and the extent of each treatment. Typical procedure lengths are generally between 1 and 3 hours long.
